St. Mary's Suffers First Loss of CAC Tournament

Box Score

Dover, Del. - Third-seeded Wesley College scored runs in fourth innings, including a four-run fifth inning, to notch an 11-4 victory over fourth-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland in first round action of the double-elimination 2008 Capital Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Tuesday afternoon.

Wesley (24-11) will now face the winner of No. 2 University of Mary Washington and No. 5 seed Villa Julie College on Thursday in second round play.

The Seahawks (16-18-1) will make the trek to Salisbury, Maryland to take on top-seeded and No. 5 Salisbury University in the second round as the Sea Gulls defeated sixth-seeded York (Pa.) College, 13-1, today.

Senior Ryan Buckland (Middletown, Del./Caravel Academy) improved to 6-0 on the season as Buckland allowed only one run on two hits in 6.0 innings, walking six and striking out four.

Sophomore Grant Morlock (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) led WC at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort, including three runs and two RBI, while senior Dan Bunnion (Blackwood, N.J./Highland Regional) posted the only two extra-base hits of the game with a double and his third home run of the year for five RBI on the day.

The Wolverines took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Bunnion homered to left field with one out to drive in both runs.

Wesley tacked on four more in the fifth for a 6-0 advantage as Morlock connected on a bases loaded single through the right side to bring in two runs.  Then Morlock was one of two to plate runs for the Wolverines on Bunnion's double right center.

St. Mary's avoided the shutout in the top of the sixth as a two-out, bases loaded walk to junior infielder Blake Beaudoin (Damascus, Md./Damascus) allowed senior DH Mike Broccolino (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) to come home.

After holding Wesley scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, the Seahawks pulled within 6-4 with a three-run seventh inning.  Sophomore outfielder Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata) plated a run when Broccolino reached on an error by the centerfielder.  Freshman infielder Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) then scored on a fielder's choice to shortstop by freshman outfielder Matt Streich (E. Greenwich, R.I./E. Greenwich).  Senior infielder Jay Benedetti (Laurel, Md./Hammond) tallied the final run of the inning on a balk by freshman Kyle McGuire (Hartly, Del./Polytech).

However, the Wolverines responded with a pair of their own in the seventh as freshman Matt Pizzolato (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) had a one-out, single through the left side to drive in one run, while Bunnion crossed home plate on a two-out balk by freshman Mikel Iraola (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha).

The Seahawks were held scoreless in the final two innings, while Wesley added three more in the bottom of the eighth behind a sac fly by Bunnion and RBI singles by Pizzolato and sophomore Tyler Burns (Dover, Del./Dover).

Three different players for St. Mary's grabbed a hit, while senior righty Ryan D'Antuono (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) suffered the loss as D'Antuono (5-5) gave up six runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings.  He walked three and struck out three as well.
