Salisbury, Md. - Fifth-ranked
Salisbury University, the top seed in the double-elimination 2008
Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Baseball Tournament, knocked out
fourth-seeded St. Mary's College of Maryland, cutting the Seahawks'
late rally short with a 4-3 decision on Thursday afternoon in
second round action.
Salisbury (34-1) will now face the winner of No. 2 University of
Mary Washington, who was a 22-0 winner over No. 3 seed Wesley
College, in third round play. The Sea Gulls have now won 34
straight, the longest win streak in the nation.
Jeff Feigl improved to 4-0 on the season as
Feigl allowed only one run on four hits on 6.0 innings
pitched. Feigl struck out four and only walked one, while
Eric Willey picked up his second save of the year
as Willey notched the last out of the game as the Seahawks had
runners on first and second.
Randy Boyle led Salisbury at the plate with a
4-for-4 effort, driving in one run and scoring another.
Andrew Miller and Tyler Riley
each had a pair of hits, while Miller walked twice.
The Sea Gulls posted a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first
inning following a one-out, two-run single down the leftfield line
by Justin Armiger.
St. Mary's (16-19-1) cut the lead to 2-1 in the top of the sixth
as senior DH Mike Broccolino (Millersville,
Md./Old Mill) connected on a two-out solo shot over the right
center fence.
Salisbury returned to its two-run advantage in its half of the
sixth inning when Jordan Crystal singled to left
center to score Will Evans who had singled through
the left side and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Brian
Camper.
The Seahawks came within 3-2 in the eighth as Kyle
Judson pitched a two-out, bases loaded walk to junior
infielder Jason Turen (Clarksville, Md./River
Hill), allowing senior infielder Jay Benedetti
(Laurel, Md./Hammond) to come home.
The Sea Gulls once again responded in their half of the inning
as Boyle drove in Camper with a single up the middle.
Freshman infielder Matt Baden (Sunderland,
Md./Huntingtown) once again put St. Mary's within one (4-3) in the
ninth inning as Baden plated a run with two outs on the scoreboard
as a result of a Sea Gull error by the centerfielder.
However, that would be all she wrote as Willey came in relief of
Ryan Bennick and got the final out of the game
with a ground out to second.
Broccolino finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run and a
double, while freshman outfielder Bobby Corton
(Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) picked up two hits. Senior
right-hander Brian Briggs (Laurel, MD./Hammond)
pitched 7.0 strong innings with three runs (two earned) on 10 hits
and three walks.
