St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland men's lacrosse team welcomed Wesley College to the
Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) with a 9-5 victory over the
Wolverines Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks won their fifth
straight on Senior Day.
Seven Seahawk seniors were recognized for their careers
on-and-off the field before the start of the contest: Brett
Caron (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central
Regional), Steve Hutwelker (Doylestown,
Pa./Central Bucks West), Mike Kessler (New
Britain, Pa./Central Bucks West), Ryan Mull
(Fallston, Md./Fallston), Pat Oliphant (Chatham,
N.J./Chatham), John Oliver (Newtown,
Conn./Newtown) and Craig Sturgeon (Severna Park,
Md./Chesapeake).
Goals from midfielders Shaun Summerville
(Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and Ryan Alexander
(Laurel, Md./Pallotti) gave St. Mary's (7-5, 5-1 CAC) a 2-1 edge
after the first period of play.
The Seahawks owned a 6-2 margin at halftime following a 4-1 run
in the second quarter with scores from Oliphant, Alexander, and
freshmen Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn)
and Chris Morihlatko (Arnold, Md./Broadneck).
Oliphant tallied two goals in the third frame to stretch the
Seahawk lead to 9-4 after 45 minutes of action.
Wesley's sophomore attackman Brad Smith (Glen
Burnie, Md./Old Mill) finished a feed from freshman attackman
Joe Trezza (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) for the
game's last goal at 5:21 in the fourth stanza.
Oliphant led all players with a season-high three goals, while
Alexander ended up with his two first-half goals.
Summerville, Rosson and sophomore attackman Josh
Hostetler (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) each notched a
goal and an assist.
St. Mary's fired off 43 shots to the Wolverines' 19, while the
Seahawks won 34 of 51 ground balls. Ranked eighth in Division
III in face-off percentage, junior face-off specialist Marc
DiPasquale (Joppa, Md./Boys' Latin) won 15-of-18 face-offs
and recorded a game-high seven ground balls.
Freshmen goalies JJ Strombosky (Westford,
Mass./Rivers) and Pat Simpson (Arnold,
Md./Broadneck) split time between the pipes as the duo combined for
seven saves. Mull caused three turnovers and scooped up three
ground balls in the Seahawk defensive end.
Smith finished with two goals for Wesley (7-5, 3-4 CAC), while
Trezza and sophomore middie Nick Pisacano (Kings
Park, N.Y./Kings Park) each chipped in a goal and an assist.
Senior goalie Jim McCleaft (Media, Pa./Sun Valley)
turned away 19 shots in the loss, while junior defenseman
Kirk Waldie (Folsom, Pa./Ridley) caused a
game-high five turnovers and had three ground balls.
The Seahawks will have a week to rest before traveling to
Salisbury, Maryland to take on top-ranked and undefeated Salisbury
University under the lights on Friday, April 11 at 7:00.
