St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland baseball team recorded its first shutout of the 2008
campaign as the Seahawks disposed of Gallaudet University, 14-0, in
seven innings Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference
(CAC) action.
Senior captain Brian Briggs (Laurel,
Md./Hammond) picked up his fourth win of the season as Briggs (4-3)
notched two strikeouts and one walk, allowing only one hit in three
innings.
St. Mary's (14-17, 7-9 CAC) jumped out to an early 5-0 margin in
the first inning as freshman DH Matt Streich (E.
Greenwich, R.I./E. Greenwich) tripled to right center to drive in
two runs for a 2-0 lead in the first inning with no outs.
Sophomore infielder Jon Gill (Owings Mills,
Md./Park) then had a sac fly to right field to score Streich.
Senior captain Mike Lance (Eldersburg,
Md./Centennial) tallied an RBI with a ground out to shortstop,
while the final run of the inning was plated by sophomore
outfielder Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall, Md./La
Plata) on a Bison error.
Two runs were added in the second for a 7-0 advantage following
an RBI double by Gill and a sac fly to leftfield by junior
infielder Jason Turen (Clarksville, Md./River
Hill).
The Seahawks tacked on two more in the fourth as Rabon connected
on an RBI triple and Lance followed that up with a single to right
center to bring home Rabon.
In the fifth inning, three additional runs were scored as a
double to left center by senior captain Jay
Benedetti (Laurel, Md./Hammond) brought in two, while a
fielder's choice to the pitcher allowed Benedetti to cross home
plate.
The final runs of the game came in the sixth as junior infielder
Blake Beaudoin (Damascus, Md./Damascus) picked up
an RBI double down the right field line, while a double down the
leftfield line by senior captain Mike Broccolino
(Millersville, Md./Old Mill) pushed SMCM's 14th and final run over
the plate.
St. Mary's finished with 14 runs on 13 hits and 13 RBI as Rabon
registered a game- and team-high three hits. Benedetti and
Broccolino chipped in two hits, while Gill had three RBI.
Leading the Bison (1-21, 0-16 CAC) at the plate were freshman
Zane Noschese (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior
Justin Lathus (Chicago, Ill.) as both of them
connected on a hit apiece.
As the Gallaudet starter, Noschese (0-5) earned the loss on the
mound as he gave up seven runs (five earned) on five hits with two
walks and two strikeouts.
The Seahawks return to action tomorrow when former CAC opponent,
Catholic University, comes to the Hawk's Nest for non-conference
action at 3:00.
