St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland women's soccer team needed only one goal to open up its
2008 season with a shutout win Saturday afternoon over the 2007
Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Runners-Up, Frostburg
State University, in non-conference action.
The Seahawks' lone goal came off the right foot of freshman
midfielder Bridget McGovern (Wrentham, Mass./King
Philip Regional) who buried a hard, low shot into the left corner
past a diving Stephanie Gwinn (Ijamsville,
Md./Urbana) at 74:11.
Before McGovern's goal, the majority of play
happened between the penalty boxes, while the two goalkeepers hung
tough on their goal line to keep the match scoreless for 74
minutes. St. Mary's posted an edge on both corner kicks (7-6)
and shots (15-10).
Senior Marie Oben (Glenn Dale, Md./St. Mary's,
Annapolis) recorded the shutout win as Oben
collected four stops.
Gwinn finished the afternoon with seven saves
and one goal against for the Bobcats.
The Seahawks will be back on the pitch on Wednesday, September 3
when St. Mary's travels to Westminster, Md. to take on McDaniel at
4:00 in non-conference play. FSU will host Eastern Mennonite
in its next game on September 3 at 7:00.
