Salisbury, Md. - The St.
Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team wrapped up competition
at the 9th Annual Elmer Lord Memorial Classic unbeaten as the
Seahawks handed the Vikings of North Park University a 1-0 setback
Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Classic hosted by
Salisbury University.
Senior forward Benard Agyingi (Baltimore,
Md./Dunbar) found the back of the net after receiving a feed from
senior midfielder Peter Krech (Hollywood,
Md./Leonardtown) to break the scoreless tie with just under nine
minutes remaining in the game.
Agyingi's goal came off of transition play by the Seahawks
(1-0-1) after freshman Dan Gressang (Bowie,
Md./Bishop McNamara) stopped North Park's freshman midfielder
Ryan McNaughton's (McHenry, Ill.) shot just 12
seconds earlier.
The Vikings (0-2) had an opportunity to take a 1-0 lead at 80:33
when North Park was awarded a penalty kick. However, senior
midfielder Isaac Lee's (Seoul, South Korea) shot
went wide.
Gressang finished the contest with five saves in his first career
start. St. Mary's edged the Vikings, 4-3 in corner kicks.
Junior Joe Cindric (Willowick, Ohio) made five
stops for North Park as the Vikings claimed a 13-10 advantage in
shots, including 11 in the second half alone.
The Seahawks will return to action on Wednesday, September 3
when SMCM travels to Baltimore to face No. 15 Johns Hopkins
University, who is currently 1-1 on the season after dropping its
season-opener to Buffalo State (3-0). North Park hopes
to pick up its first win on September 6 when the Vikings take on
Dominican University at 1:00.
