St. Mary's City, Md. - The third-ranked Falcons
of Messiah College came into Seahawk Stadium and notched a
hard-fought 2-0 shutout victory over the St. Mary's College of
Maryland men's soccer team Saturday afternoon in non-conference
action.
Messiah (6-0-1), who tops the NSCAA Middle Atlantic Region,
scored a goal in each half en route to its third straight win,
extending its unbeaten streak to seven.
Freshman midfielder Tom Renko (Ephrata,
Pa./Ephrata) put the Falcons on the scoreboard at 22:31 as
Renko, at the penalty kick spot, headed in
freshman midfielder Derek Black's (Pottstown,
Pa./Coventry Christian) cross from the right side.
Messiah needed just 54 seconds into the start of the second half
to increase its lead to 2-0. Freshman forward Danny
Thompson (Hudson, Ohio/CVCA) sent a cross from the right
side of the box to the far post where senior forward Matt
Dorsey (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) fired in a shot
into the high right corner.
The Falcons took 26 shots to St. Mary's four, while Messiah had
six corner kicks to the Seahawks' two.
Freshman Dan Gressang (Bowie, Md./Bishop
McNamara) registered eight saves in the loss for St. Mary's
(2-4-1), while junior Jared Clugston (Red Hill,
Pa./Upper Perkiomen) made only one stop.
The Seahawks return to action next Wednesday, September 24 when
St. Mary's travels to Bridgewater, Va. to take on Bridgewater
College in non-conference action at 4:00.
