St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland men's soccer team recorded its second draw in a row
Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks and Stevenson University played
to a 2-2 tie in Capital Athletic Conference action following what
one could call an intense match.
This afternoon's contest featured an on-field altercation that
nearly cleared the benches, 26 fouls, and three yellow cards along
with a few no-call hand balls.
The Seahawks (2-4-3, 1-1-1 CAC) flew out to a 2-0 lead at 15:56
behind a pair from senior Cyrus Albertson (Chevy
Chase, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]).
Albertson's first goal resulted from a long ball
sent in by sophomore midfielder Keith Hines
(Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) which Albertson then
chipped over the head of senior Adam Wiatrowski
(Baltimore, Md./Patapsco) as Wiatrowski came out
at 6:58. Albertson's second tally of the
game was like déjà vu but this time, freshman forward
Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the
Baptist) kicked in the long pass from the 50-yard line.
Stevenson (3-6-2, 0-1-1 CAC) was awarded a penalty kick at 28:59
when sophomore forward Tyler King (Parkville,
Md./Calvert Hall) was taken down in the box. Sophomore
midfielder Sean Scarselletta (Severna Park,
Md./Severna Park) buried the PK into the lower left corner to cut
St. Mary's lead to 2-1.
The game's equalizer was an own goal with 16.7 seconds left in
regulation as the Seahawk defense attempted to clear out
Scarselletta's cross but the ball went off SMCM
sophomore defender Amir Reda's (Odenton,
Md./DeMatha Catholic) head into the upper left corner, sending the
game into overtime.
St. Mary's outshot the Mustangs, 4-0, in overtime but the
Seahawks were unable to capitalize as freshman Ryan
Flannelly (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) came up with a pair
of saves.
Freshman Dan Gressang (Bowie, Md./Bishop
McNamara) continued his strong play in goal for the Seahawks as
Gressang registered three saves.
After allowing both goals and not making a save,
Wiatrowski was relieved by
Flannelly at the 15:56-minute mark.
Flannelly finished the contest with two stops.
The Seahawks rattled off 23 shots, including 13 in the second
half, while Stevenson had 10. The Mustangs held the advantage
in corner kicks, 6-3.
St. Mary's will return to action next Tuesday, September 30 when
the Seahawks welcome former CAC opponent, Catholic University, to
Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 4:00.
