Swarthmore, Pa. - For the
second time in three games, the Swarthmore College men's soccer
team scored five goals against their opponent as the No. 24 Garnet
notched a 5-1 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Sunday
afternoon in non-conference action.
Swarthmore (2-0-1) fired off four goals in the second half to
blow wide open its 1-0 halftime lead.
The Langley brothers of Honolulu, Hawaii started the scoring for
the Garnet at 34:14 as Dylan, a junior midfielder, sent in a long
pass to Morgan, a sophomore forward, who bounced a shot over
freshman Dan Gressang (Bowie, Md./Bishop
McNamara).
Just a little over two minutes into the start of the second
half, sophomore Tobias Resch (Pfungstadt, Germany)
made good on a penalty kick for a 2-0 Garnet lead.
Senior midfielder Ladule Lako Lo Sarah (Davis,
Calif./Claremont) made it a 3-0 contest when he knocked in a loose
ball following a corner kick at 51:11.
Senior forward Evan Nesterak (Parker,
Colo./Ponderosa) netted his third of the season after receiving a
short pass in front of the goal from Lako Lo Sarah less than seven
minutes after Lako Lo Sarah's tally to increase Swarthmore's lead
to 4-0 with 31:51 left in the match.
The final Garnet goal came off the foot of senior defender
Jason Thorpe (Port Washington, N.Y./Schreiber) who
drilled in a shot from just outside the box at 67:34.
St. Mary's (1-2-1) avoided the shutout when freshman midfielder
Matt Grady (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) headed
in sophomore defender Amir Reda's (Odenton,
Md./DeMatha Catholic) pass at 77:03.
Gressang ended his tough afternoon with 11
stops as he dropped to 1-1 as the Seahawk netminder.
Swarthmore starter Zachary Weimar (Rutledge,
Pa./Friends Central) did not need to make a save in 71 minutes of
action. However, freshman David D'Annunzio
(Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont) came up with one stop in the final 19
minutes of play.
The Seahawks will look to return to their winning ways next
Saturday, September 13 when St. Mary's travels to Dover, Del. to
take on Wesley College at 6:00 in the Capital Athletic Conference
opener for both squads. Last season, Wesley knocked St.
Mary's out of the CAC Tournament in the quarterfinals, advancing to
the semifinals on penalty kicks.
