Virginia Beach, Va. - The
regionally-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College women's soccer team
scored three times in the second half to post a 3-0 non-conference
victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday night.
Junior forward Courtney Whorten (Hagerstown,
Md./North) paced Virginia Wesleyan (10-3) with two goals. The
Marlins are currently ranked fourth in the South Atlantic region.
Freshman goalkeeper Grace
Koplow (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) and the St.
Mary's defense stymied the Virginia Wesleyan offense for nearly 80
minutes before Whorten finally broke through at
79:32. Whorten beat Koplow
on the run from the left after receiving a pass from junior
midfielder Meaghan DiBiase (Woodstown,
N.J./Pennsauken Bishop Eustace).
Senior midfielder Nicki Mazzoccone
(Schenectady, N.Y./Rotterdam Schalmont) and
Whorten each tallied an unassisted goal in a
1:52-minute span to seal the 3-0 win.
The Marlin defense did their part in keeping the Seahawks
(5-7-1) from finding the back of the net, holding the visitors to
just six shots and four corners. On the other side of the
ball, the Marlins registered 23 shots and 10 corner kicks.
Senior goalie Allison Lennox (Springfield,
Va./Robert E. Lee) picked up four saves in recording her fifth
shutout of the season.
Koplow finished the match with six stops and
one goal against in 82:05, while sophomore Lacey
Johnson (Leonardtown, Md./Patuxent) gave up the final two
goals in the last 7:55 of the contest.
The Seahawks will be back in action this Saturday, October 17 as
St. Mary's returns to Capital Athletic Conference play with a match
against York (Pa.) College in York at 1:00 pm.
