Second-Half Goals Propel York (PA) to CAC Win

Box Score

York, Pa. - Junior Steph Mergler (Street, Md./North Harford) tallied a goal and an assist in helping regionally-ranked York (Pa.) College remain unbeaten in Capital Athletic Conference play as the Spartans posted a 3-0 victory over the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team with three second-half goals on a chilly and rainy Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first half, senior midfielder Kat Torode (Brick, N.J./Brick Twp.) finally broke through the Seahawk defense nearly three minutes into the second half.  Torode was at the doorstep and put home a rebound at 47:55 following a 20-yard shot taken by Mergler.

Mergler gave the Spartans (12-3-1, 5-0-1 CAC) a two-goal cushion at 67:49 as she buried a shot on the ground to the right post.

With less than two minutes remaining in the contest, freshman Caitlin Aversa (Severna Park, Md./Spalding) netted her first collegiate goal as Aversa stole the ball from the defense and slipped it past freshman goalkeeper Grace Koplow (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake).

Ranked sixth in the South Atlantic region, York fired off 17 shots to the Seahawks' eight.  The Spartans edged the visitors in corner kicks, 8-7.

York's three second-half goals marked the second time this week that the Seahawks have let the game slip away from them after a scoreless first half as SMC suffered a setback by the same score on Wednesday at Virginia Wesleyan College.

Sophomore Sarah Spanarkel (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) notched her third shutout of the season with three saves.

Koplow finished the match with six stops in the Seahawk (5-8-1, 3-2-1) loss.

The Seahawks will look to snap their two-game losing skid on Tuesday, October 20 when St. Mary's hosts Marymount (Va.) University on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day at 3:30 pm.
