St. Mary's, Mary Washington Play to 1-1 Draw

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - St. Mary's College of Maryland and the University of Mary Washington played to a 1-1 draw in Capital Athletic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon to tie for second in the conference standings.

St. Mary's (5-6-1, 3-1-1 CAC) jumped out ahead first at 18:07 as senior forward Erika Kenny (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) deflected in a loose rebound on the goal line following sophomore Tina Brehm's (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) initial save of senior midfielder Sophia Esparza's (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair).

The Seahawks continued to fire in the first half, outshooting Mary Washington 11 to1, but were unable to capitalize and carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Mary Washington (8-2-3, 3-1-2 CAC) evened the match at 1-1 at 60:58 on sophomore midfielder Becky Clark's (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) first goal of the season.  Clark collected a cross from freshman defender Lilly Briedis-Ruiz (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) at the left side of the box and sailed in a shot into the top right corner.

Both teams each had a shot in the first 10-minute overtime period as St. Mary's freshman midfielder Liza Sitz's (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake) shot went wide and freshman goalkeeper Grace Koplow (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) had a diving save to deny the Eagles' junior forward Chrissy Reardon's (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) shot with eight second left.

In the second and final 10-minute overtime period, each team took three shots.  The league's leading scorer, UMW's sophomore defender Amy Olson (Crofton, Md./Arundel) rattled off two shots but both were rejected by Koplow, including a diving save which tipped Olson's second shot past the post.

St. Mary's three shots were blocked, saved by Brehm and went wide.

The Seahawks tallied 23 shots to Mary Washington's 13, while corner kicks were even at seven apiece.

Koplow finished the match with six stops, while Brehm made 12 saves.

The Seahawks will return to action a week from now when St. Mary's travels to Virginia Beach to take on Virginia Wesleyan College in a non-conference tilt under the lights at 6:00 pm.

Mary Washington will next face No. 21 The College of New Jersey in Ewing this Saturday at 2:00.
