Fredericksburg, Va. - St.
Mary's College of Maryland, the defending Capital Athletic
Conference women's soccer champion, was eliminated from the 2009
CAC playoffs on a rainy Sunday afternoon by fourth-seeded
University of Mary Washington, 2-1 in overtime.
Senior forward Allison DiPippa (Centreville,
Va./Westfield) netted the game-winner just 3:49 into the first
overtime period to send her Eagles (12-4-3) to Wednesday's
semifinals against top-seeded Salisbury University.
DiPippa collected a pass from sophomore midfielder
Becky Clark (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West)
and found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season as
well as the 2-1 OT final.
The fifth-seeded Seahawks (6-10-1), who captured the program's
first-ever CAC title a season ago, let the contest slip away from
them in the final eight minutes of regulation.
Senior forward Erika Kenny (Severna Park,
Md./Severna Park) put St. Mary's on the board first late in the
first half when Kenny picked up her fourth goal of
the season off an assist by freshman midfielder Carly
Harmon (Davisburg, Mich./Holly) at 35:54. The
Seahawk defense was on point, holding the Mary Washington to just
two shots and preserving the 1-0 lead at halftime.
The tables were turned in the second half as Mary Washington
limited the Seahawk offense to just three shots and the Eagles
fired off seven shots; however, St. Mary's defensive unit stood
strong until 82:03 when junior midfielder Sarah
Tryon (Fairfax Station, Va./South County) finally broke
through with the equalizer off an assist from sophomore defender
Amy Olson (Crofton, Md./Arundel).
Mary Washington edged the Seahawks in shots, 11 to 9, while St.
Mary's posted a 6-5 margin in corner kicks.
Sophomore Tina Brehm (Springfield, Va./Robert
E. Lee) recorded four saves in the win, while freshman
Grace Koplow (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) had
three stops for the Seahawks.
St. Mary's wraps up the 2009 campaign with a 6-10-1 overall
record and a 4-3-1 conference mark.
