St. Mary's Suffers A Pair of Losses in Season-Opening Doubleheader

Game 1 Box Score

Game 2 Box Score

Ashland, Va. - The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team started the 2009 campaign in the hole as the Seahawks (0-2) dropped both games of their season-opening doubleheader to the defending 2008 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Champion, Randolph-Macon College (2-0), on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

In Game One, Randolph-Macon registered a 6-1 victory.  The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead on three hits after the first three innings.  St. Mary's cut the lead to 2-1 behind an RBI double by sophomore leftfielder Mark Dattilio (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) to bring home sophomore shortstop Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) who was walked in his at-bat.

The Yellow Jackets broke open the game with a three-run fifth inning, which included a two-run home run by junior outfielder Michael Wallace (Powhatan, Va.).  Senior infielder Charlie Hartt (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore outfielder Brian Jordan (Columbia, Va.) each connected on two hits to pace R-MC.

Junior starter Kyle Hicks (Goochland, Va.) pitched 5.0 innings to start the year with a 1-0 mark as Hicks gave up just one run on two hits, walked four and struck out two.

The Seahawks' two hits came from Dattilio and junior transfer Lyle Kralle (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills).  Junior right-hander Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) suffered the loss as Gill allowed four runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings, while walking three and striking out two.

The nightcap was much closer as Randolph-Macon needed to pull out a 7-6 triumph after squandering a 5-nothing lead.  The Yellow Jackets opened up with a 5-run second inning but St. Mary's slowly clawed its way back, knotting the contest at 5 all in the fourth inning.

The Seahawks went up 6-5 in the fifth following Baden's run on the error by the catcher after leading off with a triple.  R-MC responded with a run of its own in the same inning as sophomore Jay Lichter (Richmond, Va.) notched a two-out, RBI single.

After a lead-off double by senior third baseman Blake Beaudoin (Damascus, Md./Damascus), the Seahawks finished the sixth inning three-and-out.  The Yellow Jackets capitalized with the would-be game-winning run as sophomore infielder Greg Mitro (Richmond, Va.) cracked a lead-off homer.

A double-play in the seventh ended the Seahawks' chances of coming away with at least one win today.

Senior outfielder J.C. Conway (Sandston, Va.) paced R-MC in the second game with two hits and two runs, while senior Nick Simons (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) earned the victory as Simons scattered three hits and fanned two in 2.1 innings.

Right-hander Matt Siciliano (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) started his rookie season with the loss as Siciliano yield the game-winning home run.  He struck out three in 1.1 innings.  Dattilio picked up three hits to finish the day 4-of-7 at the plate.  Beaudoin and Baden each had two hits in the nightcap for the Seahawks.

The Seahawks will wrap-up the three-game series with Randolph-Macon tomorrow with the first pitch set for noon.
