St. Mary's City, Md. - Four three-run innings
propelled the No. 19 Christopher Newport University baseball team
to a 13-1 non-conference victory over St. Mary's College of
Maryland Thursday afternoon.
Senior RHP Brandon Berry (King William,
Va./King William) pitched the win for the Captains (10-2-1) as
Berry (2-0) threw 5.0 solid innings, giving up
just one run on four hits. He walked four and struck out two
Seahawks.
Christopher Newport's junior infielder Parker
Neal (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg) paced the offense with
four hits, including a double and a triple, in six at-bats.
Neal also drove in four runs, while scoring
one. Junior infielder Chris Despins (Oak
Hill, Va./Oakton) batted in four runs as well as
Despins went 3-for-5 at the plate, scoring twice
himself.
The Captains finished with 17 hits, including six extra-base
hits. CNU scored three in the first inning, three in the
second, three in the fourth, one in the sixth and three in the
seventh.
Junior RHP Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park)
suffered the loss for St. Mary's as Gill (2-4)
allowed six runs (three earned) on eight hits in 1.2 innings.
Sophomore right fielder Bobby Corton (Owings
Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) led the Seahawk (10-7) offense with a
2-for-3 effort, driving in one run and stealing a base.
St. Mary's returns to action next Friday, March 20 when the
Seahawks travel to York College of Pennsylvania for a single
Capital Athletic Conference game at 3:30.
