St. Mary's City, Md. - The York College of
Pennsylvania baseball team remained the only undefeated squad in
Capital Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon as the
Spartans completed the three-game sweep of St. Mary's College of
Maryland.
The Spartans (16-2, 7-0 CAC) needed an extra inning to claim a
3-2 win in the first game as junior infielder Matt
Monti (Easton, Pa./Easton) connected on the game-winning
hit - a two-out double to bring home sophomore infielder
C.T. Stanley (Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) who had
singled in his at-bat.
York opened up with a 2-0 lead before St. Mary's (10-10, 4-6
CAC) knotted the contest at 2-all with a run in the fourth and one
in the fifth.
Sophomore Kyle Cook (Pylesville, Md./North
Harford) made the move from second base to the pitching mound for
the last 2.1 innings in relief of junior RHP Jason
Christenberry (Yoe, Pa./Dallastown).
Cook (2-1) faced 10 batters, striking out two,
walking one and scattering just two hits for the win. Nine
different Spartans notched hits.
Junior first baseman Jon Gill (Owings Mills,
Md./Park) paced the Seahawk (10-10, 4-6 CAC) offense with three
singles in four at-bats and a run scored, while senior catcher
J.P. Debrowski (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) had two
doubles in two at-bats with an RBI.
Sophomore RHP Mikel Iraola (Silver Spring,
Md./DeMatha) suffered his first loss of the season despite striking
out six and walking two in 7.2 innings as Iraola
(2-1) gave up three runs on nine hits.
York was up 4-1 after five innings in the nightcap before the
Seahawks cut the deficit to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the
sixth. Sophomore right fielder Bobby Corton
(Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) led off the inning with a double
then came home on sophomore leftfielder Mark
Dattilio's (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown)
single. Dattilio scored a run of his own
following Gill's first triple of the season.
Corton was St. Mary's leader at the plate with a
single and a double in three at-bats, while scoring two runs.
The Spartans tacked on their fifth run in the seventh for the
5-3 final as Stanley's single
drove in senior outfielder Ryan Poff (York,
Pa./Spring Grove). Poff finished the second
game with a 3-for-4 effort with two RBI and two runs to pace the
York offense.
Cook recorded his fourth save of the season as
he retired the side in order in the seventh with a strikeout
looking and two groundouts. Freshman RHP KC
Beshore (New Cumberland, Pa./Red Land) picked up the win
as Beshore (3-0) gave up just one run on one hit
in 4.0 innings.
