St. Mary's City, Md. - The St. Mary's College
of Maryland baseball team took two Capital Athletic Conference
games from Gallaudet University Sunday afternoon on Senior Day as
the Seahawks posted a 9-3 victory in the first game before using
seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 7-7 tie en
route to a 14-7 win the nightcap.
In game one, St. Mary's (13-12, 7-8 CAC) bolstered an early 1-0
first inning lead with six runs in the bottom of the second.
The Seahawks went to score nine runs on nine hits as junior first
baseman Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) and
sophomore right fielder Bobby Corton (Owings
Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) both went 2-for-3 at the plated. The
duo also scored two runs apiece while Corton drove
in one run.
Senior RHP Kevin DiManna (Kensington,
Md./Bullis) picked up his first victory of the season as
DiManna (1-0) struck out three and scattered two
hits in 3.0 innings.
For Gallaudet, sophomore Zane Noschese
(Pittsburgh, Pa./Western Pennsylvania School f/t Deaf) connected on
two hits in three at-bats with a run scored. Freshman
John Bingham (Mullica Hill, N.J./Model Secondary
School f/t Deaf) suffered the loss, giving up all nine runs and
nine hits in 5.0 innings with seven walks.
The fifth inning of the second game was a slugfest as the Bison
(2-17-1, 0-15 CAC) notched five runs on four hits as well as
capitalized on a pair of St. Mary's errors to knot the contest at
7-all. The Seahawks responded with seven runs on seven hits
in the bottom of the fifth as junior catcher Trey
Cole (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) sparked the
home team's offense with a one-out, RBI single up the middle.
The 7-7 score was actually the second time that the game was
tied as Gallaudet struck first in the first inning with a pair of
runs before the Seahawks answered with two runs of their own in the
bottom of the first to equalize the game at 2-all.
Senior third baseman Blake Beaudoin (Damascus,
Md./Damascus), Gill, and Cole
each tallied two hits to pace the Seahawk offense. Freshman
RHP Eric Gronbeck (Owings, Md./Northern) notched
the win as Gronbeck (2-0) pitched 3.0 innings of
relief, yielding five runs (none earned) on four hits.
The Bison were led by freshman Ryan Hastings'
(Cherry Valley, Mass./MSSD) 2-for-4 effort at the plate, while
senior John Moore, Jr. (Frederick, Md./Maryland
School f/t Deaf) was tagged with the loss as Moore
allowed 14 runs (nine earned) on 11 hits in 5.0 innings.
St. Mary's looks to continue its winning ways on Tuesday, March
31 when the Seahawks travel to Washington, D.C. to take on Catholic
University in non-conference action at 3:30.
