Washington, D.C. - With one out and two on,
senior second baseman Joe Devine (Medford Lakes,
N.J./Shawnee) slapped the ball down the left field line for the
walk-off single that plated the game-winning run as Catholic
University notched a 6-5 victory over St. Mary's College of
Maryland Tuesday afternoon in non-conference baseball action.
The visiting Seahawks (13-13) relinquished a 3-1 advantage in
the sixth inning when sophomore DH Eamonn Burke
(Roxbury, Mass./Boston Latin) and senior catcher Patrick
Quintana (Denver, Colo./Littleton) jacked back-to-back
home runs to put the Cardinals ahead 4-3.
St. Mary's then posted a 5-3 advantage with a run in the seventh
and one in the eighth as junior centerfielder Jacen
Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata) and senior third
baseman Blake Beaudoin (Damascus, Md./Damascus)
connected on RBI singles.
Catholic (10-11) knotted the game once again in the bottom of
the eighth as Quintana notched his second homer of
the game.
With the game tied at five, junior Mike
Bzozowski (Westampton, N.J./Moorestown), who entered in
the seventh, struck out two batters in the top of the ninth and
made a perfect pitchout which allowed Quintana to
catch sophomore right fielder Bobby Corton (Owings
Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) attempting to steal second for the third
and final out.
Bzozowski picked up his first win of the season
as Bzozowski (1-1) pitched 2.1 innings of relief
with four strikeouts and two works, while giving up a run on four
hits.
Quintana had a stellar performance for the
Cardinals at the plate with a 4-for-4 effort to pace the Catholic
offense, while seven other Cardinals connected on a hit to finish
with 11 hits in the game.
Freshman closer Matt Siciliano (Ardmore,
Pa./Lower Merion) was tagged with the loss as
Siciliano (0-3) gave up two runs on two hits in
1.1 innings.
Killebrew and junior leftfielder Justin
Rabon (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) were the only two
Seahawks to register multiple hit games as both recorded two hits
apiece.
St. Mary's returns to action next Wednesday, April 8 when the
Seahawks kick off their three-game series with Wesley College with
a single, nine-inning contest at the Hawk's Nest.
