Dover, Del. - The Wesley
College baseball team posted victories of 11-0 and 9-4 over St.
Mary's College of Maryland Monday afternoon to finish third in the
regular-season league standings and claim the No. 3 seed in the
2009 Capital Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament which begins
tomorrow with first-round action.
In the first game, junior RHP Ryan Doran
(Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) was within one out of pitching a no-hitter
as Doran (4-0) gave up two singles in the
seventh. He walked three and fanned two Seahawks.
Junior infielder Grant Morlock (Bel Air,
Md./Fallston), sophomore infielder Geoff Kimmel
(Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence), and sophomore catcher Billy
Crowe (Newark, Del./Salesianum) each went 3-for-4 to pace
the Wolverine offense as Wesley (22-12-1, 11-7 CAC) scored 11 runs
on 13 hits. Morlock crossed home plate four
times, while Kimmel and Morlock
drove in two runs.
Sophomore RHP Mikel Iraola (Silver Spring,
Md./DeMatha) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on
five walks in 1.0 inning.
Wesley took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning of the nightcap as
Kimmel jacked a two-run home run before the
Seahawks (13-16, 7-11 CAC) knotted the contest at 2-all following a
two-run homer by Iraola in the fifth.
The Wolverines broke the game open with four runs in the bottom
of the fifth to establish a 6-2 lead that they would never
relinquish as Wesley tacked on three more runs in the sixth.
St. Mary's added a run in the sixth and the seventh as the Seahawks
finished the game with four runs on five hits.
Iraola finished with a 2-for-2 effort at the
plate with his first career homer to lead SMCM at the plate.
Sophomore Barrett Enix (Suffolk,
Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) suffered the loss on the mound as
Enix (2-4) gave up six runs on six hits and four
walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out three Wolverines.
Senior LHP Mike Dombrosky (Bridgeport,
N.J./Paulsboro) picked up the win as Dombrosky
(3-4) yielded two runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks in
5.0 innings. Kimmel posted another 3-for-4
effort at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.
With the losses in Dover, St. Mary's finished fifth in the CAC
standings for the fifth seed in the CAC Tournament which begins
tomorrow. The Seahawks will travel to York, Pennsylvania
tomorrow to take on second-seeded York at 3:30.
