St. Mary's City, Md. - Back-to-back two-out
doubles by outfielders Dimitri Deoudes
(Darnestown, Md./St. John's College [D.C.]) and Cory
Hudson (Beltsville, Md./Gonzaga) drove in two runs in the
ninth to lift the Catholic University baseball team to a 16-14
non-conference victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland Thursday
afternoon.
Freshman closer Matt Siciliano (Ardmore,
Pa./Lower Merion) relieved sophomore RHP Adam
Shenk (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech) to start the ninth and
then retired Catholic's first two batters with a pair of
grounders. Then freshman infielder Timothy
Mierzwa (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) had a bunt single and
advanced to second on an error by Siciliano.
Deoudes connected on a double to left center to
score Mierzwa. Hudson then
followed suit with a double down the right field line to bring home
Deoudes. Siciliano got
senior infielder Joseph Devine (Medford Lakes,
N.J./Shawnee) to ground out to second base to end the inning.
Junior Michael Bzozowski (Westhampton,
N.J./Moorestown) notched the win on the mound for Catholic (16-18)
as Bzozowski (2-4) held St. Mary's to just one run
on two hits in 2.0 innings.
Bzozowski relieved sophomore Kevin
Emmons (Garwood, N.J./Arthur L. Johnson) in the eighth
with runners on second and third and no outs. After giving up
a two-run single and an RBI double, Bzozowski
retired the next two batters with a grounder to second and a
strikeout before walking junior second baseman Lyle
Kralle (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills).
Bzozowski ended the inning with a pop fly to
centerfield.
Hudson had a solid performance for the
Cardinals as the 5-6 senior went 4-for-5, including a double, with
three RBI and three runs scored. Senior outfielder
Bobby Picardo (Atlantic Highlands, N.J./Middletown
South) connected on three hits for the visitors, scoring three runs
and driving in one.
Catholic jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the first inning before
a five-run second inning gave St. Mary's (14-19) a 7-6 edge.
The game was tied 9-9 after four innings and then the Cardinals
regained a 14-9 advantage with two runs in the fifth and three in
the sixth. The home team responded with a run in the seventh
and four in the eighth to knot it at 14-all. The two squads
combined for 30 runs on 32 hits and eight errors.
Siciliano (0-5) was tagged with the loss after
giving up two runs on three hits in 1.0 inning. At the plate,
junior leftfielder Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall,
Md./La Plata) went 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs.
Sophomore right fielder Bobby Corton (Owings
Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) had three hits, including two doubles, for
two RBI and a run.
