Frostburg, Md. - The St.
Mary's College of Maryland baseball team claimed a 5-3 victory in
the first game before Frostburg State University responded with a
3-0 shutout in the nightcap as the two teams split Saturday's
non-conference doubleheader.
Sophomore RHP Mikel Iraola (Silver Spring,
Md./DeMatha) held the Bobcats scoreless in the first game until the
seventh inning when Iraola (3-3) gave up three
runs on three hits. He scattered four hits in all, while
fanning six FSU batters, including striking out the final two
batters of the seventh, and walking only one in 7.0 innings.
St. Mary's (15-20) plated its first run in the second inning as
senior catcher J.P. Debrowski (Sykesville,
Md./Glenelg) came home on sophomore right fielder Bobby
Corton's (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall) grounder to
second base. Debrowski led off the inning
with a double down the right field line.
The Seahawks added three more in the third as junior leftfielder
Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata)
connected on a double to score juniors Lyle Kralle
(Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) and Jacen Killebrew
(La Plata, Md./La Plata) who had each singled in their at-bat.
The visitors established a 5-0 advantage in the seventh as
Killebrew's triple to left center scored senior
third baseman Blake Beaudoin (Damascus,
Md./Damascus) who led off with a double up the middle.
Killebrew and Debrowski each
had two hits for the Seahawks in the first game.
Senior Gary Wolfe (Funkstown, Md./South
Hagerstown) suffered the loss as Wolfe (0-2)
allowed four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Four different
Bobcats had hits with junior Joe Garrity (Chesapeake, Va./Western
Branch) having a lead-off triple in the seventh.
In the nightcap, senior Mike Jester (Preston,
Md./Colonel Richardson) jacked a two-run homer in the fifth inning
to break the scoreless tie. Sophomore Timothy
Sutcliffe (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) followed suit
in the sixth as Sutcliffe notched a two-out home
run to give Frostburg (22-12) a 3-0 victory.
Sophomore David Lanier (Laurel, Md./Atholton)
picked up the win on the mound as Lanier (2-0)
pitched 3.1 scoreless and hitless innings in relief of senior
starter Kyle Timme (Pasadena, Md./Mt. St.
Joseph's).
The Seahawks only generated two hits in the second half of the
twinbill as freshman DH Nick Urso (Newtown,
Conn./Newtown) had a single to left field in the second inning and
Killebrew made contact for a double to left center
in the third.
The Seahawks return to action tomorrow when St. Mary's crosses
the Bay Bridge to take on Washington (Md.) College in a
