Baltimore, Md. - No. 12 Johns
Hopkins University (6-2) edged the St. Mary's College of Maryland
women's soccer team 1-0 Wednesday night in non-conference action
behind sophomore defender Sasha Reyes-Guerra's
(Wilton, Conn./Wilton) first career goal.
Following a scoreless first half, Reyes-Guerra
one-timed a shot high over freshman goalkeeper
Grace Koplow (Ellicott City,
Md./Wilde Lake) from six yards out, knocking in junior forward
Erin Stafford's (Doylestown, Pa./Villa Joseph
Marie) cross to the back post nearly four minutes into the start of
the second half.
St. Mary's (2-5) had a golden opportunity to force overtime as
freshman midfielder Jaci Auletto's (Tabernacle,
N.J./Seneca) header just missed off a free kick taken by senior
midfielder Sophia Esparza (Silver Spring,
Md./Montgomery Blair) as the horn sounded.
Senior Karen Guszkowski (Sayreville,
N.J./Cardinal McCarrick) notched three saves on eight shots faced
for her third shutout of the season.
For the Seahawks, Koplow finished with 10 stops
on 23 shots faced.
Johns Hopkins posted a 5-1 margin in corner kicks.
St. Mary's will look to snap its four-game losing skid this
Saturday, September 26 as the Seahawks entertain Wesley College in
Capital Athletic Conference action at 1:00 pm.
