Fitzgerald found the back of the net twice in leading
Frostburg State University women's soccer to a 3-0 shutout of St.
College of Maryland Saturday afternoon.
Amanda Wharton netted the would-be game-winner
at 11:50 as Wharton finished off a pass from
Lauren Russell. Fitzgerald
provided the Bobcats (2-0) with a 2-0 halftime lead as she
completed a feed from Cassie Donahue at 21:02.
Fitzgerald sealed the win with an unassisted
goal at 82:19.
St. Mary's (1-1) fired off 16 shots but were unable to find the
back of the net as Michelle Buckmaster notched 12
saves for the home team.
Frostburg State tallied 12 shots, while corner kicks were dead
even with three apiece.
Sophomore Lacey Johnson (Leonardtown,
Md./Patuxent) started in goal for SMCM, giving up three goals and
making four saves in 84 minutes of play. Freshman
Grace Koplow (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake)
finished out the game for the Seahawks.
St. Mary's hopes to return to the win column on Wednesday,
September 9 when the Seahawks open up Capital Athletic Conference
action with Hood College in Seahawk Stadium at 4:00.
