Salisbury, Md. - Two
second-half goals propelled the Capital University men's soccer
team to a 3-0 shutout of St. Mary's College of Maryland Sunday
afternoon in the final day of action at the Elmer Lord Memorial
Classic hosted by Salisbury University.
The first half was a defensive battle between Capital (1-2) and
the Seahawks (0-3) as it was near a dead heat in the offensive with
the Crusaders taking nine shots and four corner kicks to St. Mary's
six and two, respectively. Senior Steven
McCarthy (Centerville, Ohio) finally broke through at
26:34 as McCarthy found the back left of the net
off of sophomore Daniel McCarthy's (Centerville,
Ohio) corner kick. The Crusaders held on for the 1-0 halftime
lead.
In the second half, D. McCarthy and S.
McCarthy traded places for Capital's second goal as
D. McCarthy placed the ball into the bottom left
corner at 61:56 off of a pass from S. McCarthy who
sent in from the right side. Junior Ian
Warmbrodt (Wadsworth, Ohio) finished a feed from
S. McCarthy at 86:49 for the final tally of the
match.
The Crusaders finished with 21 shots (13 on goal) and seven
corner kicks, while St. Mary's took nine (four on goal) and had two
corner kicks.
Junior goalkeeper Justin Bultman (Maineville,
Ohio) notched four saves in his first shutout of the season, while
junior Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland
Mills) made 10 stops in the loss.
St. Mary's will return to action next weekend, September 12-13
as the Seahawks host the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC)/Old
Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Challenge. Representing
the CAC will be St. Mary's and Salisbury, while Bridgewater (Va.)
College and Randolph-Macon College are the ODAC
representatives.
