St. Mary's City, Md. – In a must-win situation for the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team, the seniors took the burden upon themselves and made their Senior Day one to remember as the Seahawks posted a 2-0 shutout victory over Wesley College Thursday afternoon to clinch the No. 5 seed in the 2010 CAC Men's Soccer Tournament.
St. Mary's (5-12-2, 3-4-1 CAC) will travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to take on fourth-seeded University of Mary Washington in CAC first round action on Halloween Sunday at 1:00 pm.
Before the contest began today, the team's 11 seniors, goalkeepers Matt Savopoulos (Scaggsville, Md.) and Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md.); defenders Zack Brooks (Mechanicsville, Md.), Greg Primiano (Barrington, R.I.), Amir Reda (Odenton, Md.), and Kevin Seeger (Gaithersburg, Md.); midfielders Andrew Bell (Marshfield, Mass.), George Gusack (College Park, Md.), and Keith Hines (Hollywood, Md.); and forwards Nick Ibello (Cockeysville, Md.) and Devon Leary (Washington, D.C.), were recognized for their years of service to the Seahawk men's soccer program.
The Seahawks came out firing right out of the gate as Gusack lobbed a pass over the Wesley defense to the far post where Hines corralled the ball and chipped it over senior goalie Nick Talarico (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) for a 1-0 Seahawk lead just 1:50 into the start of the game.
Spranklin and the St. Mary's defense did their part in the first half, holding the Wolverines (6-11-1, 2-6 CAC) without a shot while the Seahawk offense rattled of 10.
St. Mary's doubled its lead at 54:05 when Gusack's initial shot was blocked by a Wesley defender and Seeger quickly put back the rebound to the right of Talarico.
The Seahawks finished with a 20-6 shot advantage while edging the visitors, 7-6, in corner kicks.
Spranklin made two saves in the team's first shutout win of the season while Talarico picked four stops as Wesley's season comes to a close with today's loss.
