St. Mary's City, Md. – Defenders
Frank
VanGessel (Delmar, Del./Delmar) and J.T. Bowers
(Columbia, Md./River Hill) each found the back of the net to lead
the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to their third
victory of the season – a 2-1 triumph over non-conference
foe, Shenandoah University, Wednesday afternoon.
Today's win halted the Seahawks' three-match losing skid as well

VanGessel netted his first career goal at

dodging a few Shenandoah defenders before beating first-year
Zac Rogers (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) to the
left lower corner.
Rogers turned away three shots in the first
half to keep the Shenandoah in the game as the Seahawks carried a
1-0 lead into halftime.
Shenandoah (3-7-1) tied up the contest at 79:47 when senior
midfielder Kyle Farrell (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson)
sent a long ball from the defensive 25-yard into the penalty box
and first-year midfielder Billy Sipos (Bethel,
Ohio/Bethel-Tate) ran onto it for the goal.
Bowers picked up the game-winner as well as his
first career goal at 85:43, chipping in the ball at the near
post.
While corner kicks were even at three apiece, St. Mary's held a
13-9 shot advantage.
Senior Paul
Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) had one save
in 85 minutes before being sent off the field with a red
card. Senior Matt
Savopoulos (Scaggsville, Md./Reservoir) finished out
the game for the Seahawks.
Rogers finished the game with six stops for the
Hornets.
St. Mary's hopes to continue its winning ways this Saturday,
October 9 when they travel to Pomona, N.J. to take on The Richard
