Salisbury, Md. - Salisbury
University picked up their first wins of the season Saturday
afternoon as the No. 7 Sea Gulls posted wins of 4-0 and 4-3 over
visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland, who was stepping onto a
diamond for the first time this season. St. Mary's will wrap
up its series at Salisbury Sunday with a single game at 12:00 pm.
Back-to-back blizzards have kept the Seahawk baseball squad
gym-bound since about the end of January and that was evident in
the first game as SU's junior LHP Dustin Herbert
(Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) threw a no-hitter in leading
Salisbury (2-1, 2-0 CAC) to a 4-0 shutout.
Herbert fanned seven Seahawk batters while giving
up just two walks to seniors Lyle Kralle (Great
Mills, Md./Great Mills) and Donald Redmiles
(Davidsonville, Md./DeMatha).
The Sea Gulls notched all four runs in the fifth as senior
Mike Celenza (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard)
connected on a two-run single to score junior Andrew
Miller (Schwenksville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and senior
Trevor Cobb (Hagerstown, Md./Saint Maria
Goretti). Earlier in the inning, Miller
singled to drive in senior Tim Kellinger
(Knoxville, Md./Saint Maria Goretti). Senior Ryan
Smith (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) closed out the inning with
an RBI double.
Sophomore RHP Mike Victory (Westford,
Mass./Westford Academy) suffered the loss in the first game,
allowing four runs on six hits with a career-best three strikeouts
and three walks in 4.1 innings of work.
After sophomore Bill Morton (Newark,
Del./Newark) gave Salisbury a 1-0 lead early in third inning with
his RBI single through the right side, the Sea Gulls stretched out
their advantage to 3-0 as Celenza scored on wild
pitch and Smith scored on a passed ball.
St. Mary's (0-2, 0-2) closed the gap to 3-1 in the fourth inning
as Kralle scored on the sacrifice fly to right
field by senior Jon Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park).
Junior Devon Quaglietta (Monroe Twp.,
N.J./Notre Dame) connected on the would-be game-winning hit in the
fifth as Quaglietta knocked one out of the park to
give the Sea Gulls a two-run cushion.
The Seahawks came within one in the sixth as red-shirt
first-year John Stewart (Annapolis, Md./St.
Mary's, Annapolis) got his with a two-run shot that scored
junior Bobby Corton (Owings Mills, Md./Calvert
Hall) who had lead-off with a single.
That would be all the scoring for St. Mary's as junior RHP
Mark Peterson (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) retired
the next five Seahawk batters in a row before giving up a single to
junior Matt Baden (Sunderland,
Md./Huntingtown). Peterson closed out the
game with a strikeout, picking up the save with three strikeouts in
2.0 innings of work. First-year Andrew Levy
(Hampstead, Md./North Carroll) notched the win with one run on
three hits and four strikeouts (two walks) in 4.0 innings pitched.
Junior RHP Mikel Iraola (Kensington,
Md./DeMatha) took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in
3.0 innings of work with three strikeouts and three walks.
