Vero Beach, Fla. – Historic Dodgertown
has yet to be kind to the St. Mary's College of Maryland
baseball team as St. Mary's dropped its second straight game
in the Sunshine State Monday morning, suffering a 4-0 setback at
the hands of Babson College. Despite connecting on 10 hits,
the Seahawks (3-8) were unable to cross home plate and left 11 on
base.
First-year Kyle Lyon (Flemington, N.J./Delaware
Valley Regional) threw 5.1 innings to record his first collegiate
victory, allowing seven hits and striking out four Seahawk batters.
Babson (1-2) claimed a 2-0 lead in the first inning when
first-year Chris Kucher (Westwood, Mass./Xaverian
Brothers) lined a single to left that scored sophomore
Billy Miller (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Boston College
HS), who had singled, and senior captain Dave
Ahern (Bedford, Mass./Bedford), who had walked.
The Beavers added another run in the third when senior captain
Peter O'Toole (Salem, Mass./St. John's Prep)
doubled down the leftfield line, moved to third on a single by
Miller, and scored on an RBI double to right
center by sophomore Travis Jonasson (Needham,
Mass./Catholic Memorial).
Jonasson later scored Babson's fourth and final
run in the sixth, when he led off with a single, took second on a
passed ball, and scored on a base hit by senior Jake
Bartlett (Weymouth, Mass./Boston College HS).
Junior Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown)
went 3-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base to pace the St.
Mary's offense while senior Lyle Kralle
(Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) and first-year Andrew
Osborne (Damascus, Md./Damascus) each finished
2-for-3. Sophomore Nick Vergelli
(Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) also connected on two singles.
Sophomore Mike Victory (Westford,
Mass./Westford Academy) was saddled with the loss as
Victory (0-3) gave up three runs on eight hits
with strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.
The Seahawks hope to turn the tide tomorrow when they face
Central (Iowa) College at 1:00 pm at Historic Dodgertown.
