St. Mary's City, Md. – York College
of Pennsylvania notched 19 runs on 17 hits as the Spartans secured
a 19-2 Capital Athletic Conference victory over St. Mary's
College of Maryland Wednesday afternoon, snapping the
Seahawks' four-game win streak.
York (7-9, 4-5 CAC) scored at least two runs in five innings,
including seven runs in the second inning to boast a 9-0
advantage. The Spartans' ace, first-year RHP
Joey Couch (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial),
improved to 2-0 as Couch gave up one run on seven
hits with three strikeouts and one walk in 6.0 innings of work.
Junior Rob Klinck (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley
Regional) paced the YCP offense with a 4-for-6 effort at the plate,
recording two triples and two doubles for a total of five
RBI. Senior Mike Connolly (Selden,
N.Y./Newfield) had a strong offensive showing as well, going
3-for-5 with two doubles and picking up four RBI while scoring
twice.
The Seahawk bats were not silent as St. Mary's (7-12, 4-6
CAC) connected on 11 hits, including two triples by senior
Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata).
SMCM scored once in the fourth as junior Ian
Simpson-Shelton (Upper Marlboro, Md./DeMatha) made contact
for a two-out single to bring home junior Matt
Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) after
Baden led off the inning with a single.
The Seahawks picked up their second run in the seventh when
senior Louis Sheppard (Uniontown, Md./Francis
Scott Key) hit a two-out RBI single to help sophomore Eric
Gronbeck (Owings, Md./Northern) cross home plate.
Gronbeck reached base with a two-out single as
well.
First-year Andrew Osborne (Damascus,
Md./Damascus) went 2-for-2 at the plate while 10 other Seahawks
made contact with the ball. Senior captain Jon
Gill (Owings Mills, Md./Park) suffered the loss on the
mound after 1.1 innings of work, yielding eight runs (one unearned)
on five hits with two walks and one strikeout.
The Seahawks will wrap up the three-game series with York this
Saturday, March 27 at York with two seven-inning games. First
pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
