St. Mary's City, Md. - Sophomore attackman
Michael Mules (Ellicott City, Md./Boys' Latin) led
12 different Seahawk scorers with career-highs of five goals, three
assists and eight points as St. Mary's College of Maryland cruised
to a 20-9 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Wesley College
Wednesday afternoon.
First-year attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston,
Md./Fallston) also put in a strong performance for the Seahawks as
Mull tallied a goal and four helpers while junior
attackman Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn)
contributed three goals and an assist.
St. Mary's (5-3, 2-0 CAC) rolled to a 6-1 advantage in the first
period as the Seahawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the
first five minutes behind a pair of goals by
Mules. Senior attackman Brad
Smith (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) provided a speed bump to
the home team's flow with an unassisted goal at 8:46.
SMCM scored the final two goals as Mules
scored one and assisted on the other.
The second quarter was all even as both teams notched three
goals each and St. Mary's headed into halftime with a 9-4 margin
with Mull assisting on two scores.
Smith paced Wesley (1-7, 0-2 CAC) with three
goals and two assists while senior attackman Brad
Bivins (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) added a goal and two
assists.
The Seahawks repeated their first quarter antics by outscoring
Wesley, 6-1, in the third as St. Mary's scored the final five of
the period, including two in a 23-second span. Senior
attackman Dan Skeels (Roseland, N.J./West Essex)
netted the Wolverines' lone goal.
It was a closer match-up in the final stanza as the two teams
traded the first six goals before juniors Sean
Reitenbach (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) and
Chris Edge (Chestertown, Md./St. Andrew's School
[Del.]) netted back-to-back goals for St. Mary's.
First-years Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury,
Mass./Saint John's) and Alex Brylske (Bowley's
Quarters, Md./Mt. Carmel) combined for a 13-of-20 effort in the
center circle as St. Mary's controlled the face-offs with a
15-of-29 showing for the game.
The Seahawks outhustled Wesley on ground balls, 42-31, as
Mitchell and sophomore defenseman Peter
Windsor (Towson, Md./St. Paul's) each scooped up seven
loose balls.
Juniors Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's)
and Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and
first-year Ben Wheeler (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick)
combined to hold the Wolverines to just four goals as S.
Wheeler made six saves in 40 minutes and
Simpson had two in 17 minutes.
St. Mary's outshot the Wolverines, 53-32, and Wesley's three
goalies turned away 19 shots as junior starter Michael
McGuigan (Middletown, Del./Middletown) picked up 12 saves
in 33 minutes.
The Seahawks will return to action this Saturday, April 3 when
St. Mary's hosts Hood College in league play at 3:00 pm in Seahawk
Stadium.
