St. Mary's City, Md. - The University of Mary
Washington baseball team snapped its four-game losing streak to St.
Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday afternoon with a 9-2 triumph
behind junior Eric Rehbein's (Alexandria,
Va./Gonzaga) dual effort at the plate and on the mound.
Rehbein (3-0) pitched 8.0 solid innings with
two runs (one earned) on five hits as he struck out seven Seahawk
batters and walked only two. Rehbein helped
out his own cause with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate and three runs
scored.
Mary Washington (14-5, 7-3 CAC) scored all the runs it would
need in the second inning as the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead,
capitalizing on a pair of Seahawk errors to score two of those
runs.
The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the fourth behind a
two-out, two-run homer by senior Will Wright (St.
Louis, Mo./St. Louis Priory). UMW picked up another two in
the sixth as Wright connected on an RBI
double and then scored on a wild pitch.
St. Mary's (7-16, 4-9 CAC) finally got on the scoreboard in the
eighth inning as junior Brad Shepherd (Columbia,
Md./Oakland Mills) scored on a sac fly by junior Matt
Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) after leading off with
a double. Senior Jacen Killebrew (La Plata,
Md./La Plata) then crossed home plate on an RBI single by sophomore
Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) after reaching
on an Eagle error.
UMW picked up its final run in the eighth as well as
Rehbein scored an unearned run on a Seahawk double
play.
Six different St. Mary's players picked up hits, including
senior Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata)
who stretched his hit streak to 11 straight with a 1-for-4 effort.
Junior Barrett Enix (Suffolk,
Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) suffered the loss as
Enix (3-2) threw 7.0 innings, giving up eight runs
(five earned) on 11 hits with two walks.
The Seahawks will wrap up their three-game series with Mary
Washington this Saturday, April 3 with a doubleheader at the Hawk's
Nest. The first pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
