Mary Washington Tops St. Mary's

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. - The University of Mary Washington baseball team snapped its four-game losing streak to St. Mary's College of Maryland Wednesday afternoon with a 9-2 triumph behind junior Eric Rehbein's (Alexandria, Va./Gonzaga) dual effort at the plate and on the mound.

Rehbein (3-0) pitched 8.0 solid innings with two runs (one earned) on five hits as he struck out seven Seahawk batters and walked only two.  Rehbein helped out his own cause with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate and three runs scored.

Mary Washington (14-5, 7-3 CAC) scored all the runs it would need in the second inning as the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead, capitalizing on a pair of Seahawk errors to score two of those runs.

The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the fourth behind a two-out, two-run homer by senior Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis Priory).  UMW picked up another two in the sixth as Wright connected on an RBI double and then scored on a wild pitch.

St. Mary's (7-16, 4-9 CAC) finally got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning as junior Brad Shepherd (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) scored on a sac fly by junior Matt Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) after leading off with a double.  Senior Jacen Killebrew (La Plata, Md./La Plata) then crossed home plate on an RBI single by sophomore Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) after reaching on an Eagle error.

UMW picked up its final run in the eighth as well as Rehbein scored an unearned run on a Seahawk double play.

Six different St. Mary's players picked up hits, including senior Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) who stretched his hit streak to 11 straight with a 1-for-4 effort.

Junior Barrett Enix (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) suffered the loss as Enix (3-2) threw 7.0 innings, giving up eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits with two walks.

The Seahawks will wrap up their three-game series with Mary Washington this Saturday, April 3 with a doubleheader at the Hawk's Nest.  The first pitch is slated for 1:00 pm.
