Salisbury, Md. – No. 12 Salisbury
University used a nine-run sixth inning to notch a convincing 17-4
victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland in the first round of
the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference baseball tournament Wednesday
afternoon.
The top-seeded Sea Gulls (23-6) made contact 20 times, including
six extra-base hits, for 17 runs scored while committing three
errors. Junior RHP Drew Baldwin
(Winston-Salem, N.C./Mount Tabor) notched his fourth win of the
season as Baldwin pitched 2.0 innings and finished
with one strikeout. Junior starter Dustin
Herbert (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) went 4.0 innings,
racked up six strikeouts and gave up three runs (two earned).
Senior Mike Celenza (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince
Orchard) and juniors Devon Quaglietta (Monroe
Township, N.J./Notre Dame) and Will Evans
(Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) all notched three hits to pace
Salisbury at the plate.
St. Mary's (9-22) struck first in the first inning as junior
Matt
Baden (Sunderland, Md./Huntingtown) connected on a
lead-off double and then scored when sophomore Nick Urso
(Newtown, Conn./Newtown) grounded into a double play.
The Sea Gulls knotted the contest at 1-all in the first before
adding three runs in the second and two in the third to post a 6-2
lead after three innings.
The Seahawks cut the deficit to 6-3 in the fourth as senior
Jon
Gill's (Owings Mills, Md./Park) single up the middle
drove in junior Bobby Corton
(Owings Mills, Md./Calvert Hall), who reached on a fielder's
choice.
Salisbury boosted its lead to 8-3 in the fourth before exploding
for nine in the sixth. St. Mary's notched its final run in
the seventh as Killebrew scored on a Sea Gull
fielding error after leading off the inning with a single to left
center.
Baden, senior Lyle Kralle
(Great Mills, Md./Great Mills), Corton, and junior
Mark
Dattilio (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) each had
two hits for the Seahawks.
Junior RHP Barrett Enix
(Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) picked up the loss as
Enix pitched 4.0 innings, giving up eight runs on
10 hits with three walks.
The Seahawks will travel to York, Pennsylvania tomorrow to take
on second-seeded York College in a second-round elimination
game at 3:30 pm. York suffered an 8-5 setback to No. 5-seed
University of Mary Washington in first round action today.
The Spartans swept the regular-season series by the scores of 19-2
(at SMCM on March 24) and 6-3/5-4 (8 innings) [at YCP on March
27].
