Box Score
St. Mary's City, Md. – Senior
Shayne Kersey's (Newport News, Va./Hampton
Christian) 2-for-4 effort at the plate and four RBI helped
Christopher Newport University to a 6-3 non-conference victory over
St. Mary's College of Maryland in baseball action Tuesday
afternoon.
Kersey was the only Captain to notch multiple
hits as he connected for his 11th double of the season.
Senior RHP Bryce Morrison (McLean, Va./Langley)
remained undefeated on the season as Morrison
picked up his third win of the year by allowing two runs (one
earned) on five hits and fanning three batters. Junior LHP
Jason Jenkins (Washington, Va./Rappahannock)
nabbed his first save of 2010, throwing 4.0 solid innings,
scattering three hits and giving up one run with two
strikeouts.
St. Mary's (9-24) struck first in the first inning as
senior Lyle Kralle (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills)
scored on a fielding error by CNU's shortstop, senior
Parker Neal (Strasburg, Va./Strasburg).
The Captains (23-14) snatched the lead in the second with three
runs as Kersey's two-out, two-run double
sparked his squad. Senior Joey Martin
(Stafford, Va./North Stafford) drove in Kersey for
the third run with a single to right center.
The Seahawks responded in the third with a run to cut the
deficit to 3-2 as Kralle doubled the leftfield
line to bring home junior Matt Baden (Sunderland,
Md./Huntingtown), who had tripled to left center.
Morrison forced back-to-back pop flies to end the
inning and put an end to St. Mary's rally.
CNU staked a three-run cushion in the fourth with two runs as
Kersey's single to right field scored both
sophomore Steven Lindemuth (Burke, Va./Lake
Braddock) and sophomore Ben Lenda (Chesapeake,
Va./Great Bridge). Lindemuth led off with a
triple to right center while Lenda was hit by a
pitch and then stole second.
Each side notched a run in the seventh for the 6-3 final.
Baden, Kralle and senior
Justin Rabon (Charlotte Hall, Md./La Plata) each
recorded two hits for the Seahawks with Baden
picking up his fourth triple of the season. Junior
Mikel Iraola (Kensington, Md./DeMatha) suffered
the loss on the mound, giving up five runs (four earned) on four
hits with five strikeouts.
The Seahawks will host Washington (Md.) College tomorrow at 3:00
pm in the Hawk's Nest.
