Box Score

Aston, Pa. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team opened up the 2010 campaign on the wrong side of the tracks as the Seahawks suffered a 5-0 setback at the hands of non-conference opponent, Neumann College, Wednesday night.

The Seahawks (0-1) hope to notch their first win of the season this Labor Day weekend at the Elmer Lord Classic hosted by Salisbury University.  St. Mary's will face Elizabethtown College for its first opponent on Saturday at 4:00 pm before taking on SUNY Geneseo the next day at 1:00 pm.

Neumann (1-0), a member of the Colonial States Athletic Conference, earned a 4-0 halftime advantage behind a hat trick from junior midfielder Andrew Leissing (Beachwood, N.J./Toms River South).

The Knights tacked on one more at 81:24 for the 5-0 final as Leissing assisted on the play.

Senior Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) hung tough in goal for the Seahawks, turning away seven of Neumann's 12 shots on goal.

At the other end of the field, junior all-conference selection Ted Scharfenberg (Holbrook, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) had St. Mary's only two shots on goal.

St. Mary's edged the Knights in corner kicks, 5-3.
