Payne Leads St. Mary's to First Win of 2010

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior midfielder Brian Payne (Catonsville, Md./Calvert Hall) scored twice in lifting the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team to their first victory of the 2010 campaign – a 2-1 triumph over Methodist University in the final day of action at the Seahawk Classic.

An all-conference selection last season, Payne gave the Seahawks (1-3-1) a 1-0 lead at 25:47 when he flicked a loose ball past junior goalie Kyle Beach (Tampa, Fla./Central) as Beach was coming out to make a play on the ball.

The lead lasted until the start of the second half as first-year midfielder Clayton Newton (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) found the back of the net just 28 seconds in following a feed from first-year forward Eric McGinnis (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin).

Payne returned the lead to St. Mary's in the 75th minute as he converted on a penalty kick.

The Seahawks posted a 23-13 advantage in shots while Methodist tallied a 6-2 margin in corner kicks.

Senior goalie Paul Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) finished with five stops in the Seahawk win while Beach ended the contest with 10 saves.

In the other Seahawk Classic match, No. 20 Salisbury University (5-0-1) notched a 3-0 shutout over Greensboro College (1-3-1).

St. Mary's returns to action Wednesday, September 15 when the Seahawks travel to Pennsylvania to face No. 15 Swarthmore College in non-conference play at 7:00 pm.
