Salisbury, Md. – In the
first day of the 2010 Elmer Lord Classic hosted by Salisbury
University, the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team
dropped a 2-0 decision to Elizabethtown College Saturday
afternoon.
The Seahawks (0-2) will look to turn the tide around tomorrow
during the final day of the Elmer Lord Classic as St. Mary's takes
on SUNY Geneseo (0-1-1) at 1:00 pm. Geneseo suffered a 2-1
setback to No. 20 Salisbury earlier in the day.
Despite the loss, St. Mary's much improvement from Wednesday's
5-0 loss at Neumann College. The Seahawks outshout
Elizabethtown, 10-7, and edged them in corner kicks, 6-4.
Five different Seahawks put the ball on cage but junior
Andy Barnes (Wilmington, Del./A.I. DuPont) denied
all five shots.
Elizabethtown (1-0), a member of the Commonwealth Conference,
held only a 1-0 halftime advantage behind an unassisted goal from
sophomore forward Javeim Blanchette (Old Town, St.
Kitts and Nevis/Washington Archibald) at 26:24. The Seahawk
defense regrouped and held the Blue Jays scoreless for the
remainder of the first half.
St. Mary's dominated the second half, outshooting the Blue Jays
by a 9-4 margin, but Barnes came up with four
second half shots. Elizabethtown's second goal was an own
goal as the ball was played in by senior midfielder Chris
Rice (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) and deflected off
a Seahawk player.
Senior Paul
Spranklin (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) made two saves
in goal for the Seahawks.
