Big Second Half Propels Frostburg State Past St. Mary's Women's Soccer

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – Sophomore forward Jo Rambo (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) scored a pair of goals for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's team but Frostburg State University (9-1-1, 2-0-1 CAC) rallied with four goals in the second half to defeat the Seahawks Saturday afternoon, 4-2, in Capital Athletic Conference action.

St. Mary's (4-3, 1-2 CAC) dominated the first 45 minutes of play against the Bobcats of FSU, limiting their offensive touches to a bare minimum while taking a two-goal advantage.  The Seahawks immediately came out aggressive and in the 4th minute of action, Rambo received a cross from first-year midfielder Lexy McCarty (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) and finished at the near post to put St. Mary's ahead, 1-0.

Controlling both possession and the tempo of the game, St. Mary's continued to keep Frostburg on its own half of the field.  The Seahawks struck again in the 23rd minute when Rambo received a slot pass from first-year midfielder Caryn Thompson (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville), finishing again at the near post for a commanding St. Mary's 2-0 lead.

St. Mary's took the 2-0 lead and all the momentum into halftime; however, it was the Bobcats who came out motivated in the second half and turned up the heat on the St. Mary's defense.  Frostburg got on the board with an unassisted goal off the foot of sophomore forward Adria Graham (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) who chipped the ball over the Seahawk goalkeeper from the top of the box.

Ten minutes later, Graham fired again as she took advantage of a defensive miscue and finished unassisted into the back of the net for the game-tying goal.  Frostburg State put away the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute of play when senior forward Cassie Donahue (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) again used a defensive miscue of the Seahawks to score the third Bobcat goal and notch their first lead of the afternoon.  Donahue tacked on another goal in the 81st minute to ensure the victory for the visiting Bobcats.

FSU outshot the Seahawks, 16-11, and earned five corners to St. Mary's four.

Sophomore Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) turned away five shots in the loss.

The Seahawks will be back on the field on Wednesday, October 5 at 4:00 pm when they take on Stevenson University in CAC action at Seahawk Stadium.
