Box Score Middletown, Conn. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 non-conference decision to Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon as both teams combined for three goals in an 85-second span and 30 shots.
Following a scoreless first half, the Wesleyan Cardinals (7-4) struck first as junior Laura Kurash (Voorhees, N.J./William Penn Charter School) took a pass on the right side, ran it in and shot into the left of the net for a 1-0 lead at 63:50.
Less than a minute later, 32 seconds to be exact, St. Mary's (5-5-1) responded as sophomore forward Jo Rambo's (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) hard shot from the right side hit off the crossbar and landed at the feet of junior forward Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana) who sent it past first-year goalie Jessica Tollman (Brookline, Mass./BBN) for a 1-1 game.
It didn't take long for Wesleyan to claim a one-goal lead again as junior Mikaela Curtin (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) found the back of the net from 12 yards out at 65:15.
Junior midfielder Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) had an opportunity to tie the game once again with 22 seconds left in regulation but Latour's shot was high.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) made three saves for the Seahawks as Wesleyan fired off 17 shots to St. Mary's 13. The Seahawks edged the hosts, 2-1, in corner kicks.
The Seahawks will be back in action on Wednesday, October 19 when St. Mary's travels to Washington, D.C. to take on Marymount (Va.) University in Capital Athletic Conference action at 1:00 pm. The game will be played at Trinity (D.C.) University.
