Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Junior forward Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana) tallied four goals, including two in 28 seconds, as the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team exploded for six goals in a 6-1 win over Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action Friday afternoon. The victory snaps the Seahawks' (5-4, 2-3 CAC) four-game losing streak.
Eskay started her third career hat trick with an unassisted goal at 7:50 as she took a shot from 12 yards out at the near post. Wesley (6-7, 1-4 CAC) responded less than two minutes later as senior forward Kim Fearnbach (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) sent a back-heel pass to the penalty kick where fellow classmate Lacey Smith (Logan Twp, N.J./Kingsway Regional) one-timed into the back of the net.
Eskay struck again in the 14th minute as she corralled a pass from sophomore forward Jo Rambo (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown). The duo combined again 28 seconds later as Rambo's shot bounced off the post and Eskay was there with the put-back.
Rambo then netted one of her own at 15:13 as she headed in junior midfielder Yvonne Latour's (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) 25-yard free kick. St. Mary's headed into the half with a 5-1 advantage behind Eskay's third goal in 30th minute off an assist from senior forward Bridget McGovern (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip Regional).
First-year forward Zoë Thorpe (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) collected her first career goal in the 64th minute as Thorpe finished off a misplayed ball by Wolverine goalkeeper Sydney Kahan (Cranston, R.I./Cranston).
The Seahawk defense was solid as they held Wesley to just five shots, including just one in the second stanza. St. Mary's outshot the Wolverines, 26-5, while edging them 5-4 in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) notched two saves in 67 minutes of work while fellow classmate Allison Griffin (Dayton, Md./River Hill) finished out the game in relief.
The Seahawks will be back in action next Wednesday, October 12 when St. Mary's welcomes the University of Mary Washington to Seahawk Stadium for Senior Day. Kickoff is at 4:00 pm. Prior to the start of the game, St. Mary's will recognize McGovern, the team's lone senior.
