St. Mary's Women's Soccer Upsets Stevenson to Advance to CAC Title Game

Box Score

Owings Mills, Md. – It was an exciting moment for the St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team Wednesday night as the Seahawks eliminated the defending Capital Athletic Conference champion, second-seeded Stevenson University, 2-1, in the semifinals of the CAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.

Midfielders Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and Lexy McCarty (Germantown, Md./Clarksburg) found the back of the net for the Seahawks (6-6-3) with McCarty netting the game-winning goal in the 66th minute.  Reigning CAC Defensive Player of the Week, sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford), came through with seven saves.

The sixth-seeded Seahawks advance to their third championship title match in the program's history, finishing as runners-up in 2006 and winning the school's first-ever CAC women's soccer crown in 2008.

St. Mary's looks to notch its second championship title on Saturday, November 5 when they face top-seeded Salisbury University in Salisbury.  Salisbury was a 3-2 winner over fifth-seeded University of Mary Washington in the other semifinal match-up, scoring the game-winner in the 80th minute.

The Seahawks struck first in the contest as sophomore forward Jo Rambo (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) sent a through ball up the middle which Latour collected, dribbled up the field just inside the penalty box and fired past senior keeper Brittany Ross (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) at 19:36.

Stevenson (12-5-3) responded in the 32nd minute when sophomore forward Jamie Matlock (Bridgeton, N.J./Cumberland) put in a loose ball from inside the box.

The contest remained scoreless for the next 34 minutes until McCarty capitalized on a Stevenson defensive misclear, corralling the loose ball and shooting it just inside the near post at 65:12.

Following St. Mary's go-ahead goal, the Mustangs went into urgency mode on attack, taking nine shots and earning four corner kicks in the final 25 minutes.  Wirtz collected back-to-back stops in a four-minute period during that frenzy to preserve the Seahawks' 2-1 lead.

Stevenson dominated shots and corner kicks by 27-7 and 8-2 margins, respectively.

As the Seahawks have made their way through the playoffs, St. Mary's has avenged regular-season losses to Frostburg State University and now Stevenson.  The Seahawks hope to do the same on Saturday when they face Salisbury.  St. Mary's suffered a 2-1 overtime defeat at Salisbury on October 22.
