Box Score Salisbury, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime loss to top-seeded Salisbury University in the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship game Saturday afternoon, ending the sixth-seeded Seahawks' three-game unbeaten streak and their Cinderella run through this year's CAC playoffs.
St. Mary's (6-7-3) was playing in the program's third championship title match, finishing as runners-up in 2006 and now in 2011 while winning the school's first-ever league crown in 2008.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) finished the contest with a career-best 16 saves to keep the Seahawks in contention for a second CAC title but Salisbury finally broke through in the 96th minute as junior midfielder Bonnie Sandone (Downingtown, Pa./Coatesville) headed home fellow classmate Sarah Pfundstein's (Crofton, Md./South River) corner kick for the game-winning goal and her first goal of the season.
Salisbury (13-5-2) dominated the first half with a 12-2 shot advantage as well as a 6-0 corner kick margin but Wirtz turned away eight shots to maintain a scoreless draw at halftime. Midfielders Marilyn Hucek (Silver Spring, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and Liza Sitz (Silver Spring, Md./James Hubert Blake) fired the Seahawk shots but first-year Michelle Conrad (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) denied them both.
The Seahawk offense picked up intensity in the second half, notching six shots as sophomore midfielder Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) took three shots on frame. Latour's last shot on target occurred in the 87th minute but Conrad was able to knock it away.
Wirtz sent the game into extra periods as she save a pair of Sea Gull shots in 26-second span, including one as the time expired.
