St. Mary's City, Md. – The No. 20 St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team opened up the 2011 campaign Sunday afternoon against No. 5 Roanoke College but it was Roanoke who came out on top as the Maroons posted a 20-7 non-conference win.

St. Mary's (0-1) opened up strong by scoring two goals in less than three minutes as midfielders Gordy Long (Monkton, Md./St. Paul's) and Will Bell (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) each found the back of the net for a 2-0 Seahawk lead at 10:52.  Roanoke responded with two of its own to tie it up at 5:49 before senior captain Bobby Cooke (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) sent the Seahawks into the second period with a 3-2 lead following his goal at 1:51.

It was all Roanoke (1-0) in the second stanza as the Maroons notched four unanswered goals to head into intermission with a 6-3 advantage.

Roanoke outscored the Seahawks, 6-2, in the third quarter to build its lead to seven goals.  Cooke and senior captain Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) scored for St. Mary's in the third.

The fourth period was all the Maroons once again as Roanoke found the back the net eight times.  Bell and Rosson did break through for the Seahawks in the final period.

Attackmen Noah Gibby (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) and Jeff Keating (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) paced the Maroon offense with four goals and two assists apiece while senior midfielder Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser) added three goals and an assist.

Roanoke dominated all statistical categories for the game, taking 51 shots to the Seahawks' 37 and scooping up 41 ground balls to 30.  The Maroons also posted a 21-of-30 advantage in face-offs.

Rosson finished as the Seahawk offensive leader with two goals and an assist while Cooke and Bell both ended up with two goals each.

In goal, Seahawk junior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) and senior Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) split time in goal.  Both made four saves in their respective half with Wheeler starting the game.

St. Mary's hopes to pick up its first win of the season this coming Saturday, February 26 when the Seahawks face their second straight Top 20 team in No. 16 Dickinson College in a neutral-site game at 2:00 pm.  The game will be played at Severn School in Severna Park, Maryland.
