Dover, Del. – Four Seahawks put forth multiple-goal efforts as the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's lacrosse team posted a 10-6 Capital Athletic Conference victory over host Wesley College on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
Senior attackman Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) registered a hat trick for his first multiple-goal game since March 30 while junior attackman J.P. Lennon (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) notched his third consecutive multiple-goal contest with two scores. Senior midfielder Bobby Cooke (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) added two goals as well while sophomore midfielder Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) matched his career-best with four assists.
The win put St. Mary's (4-8, 3-4 CAC) into a tie for fifth place with Hood College in the conference standings. The Seahawks travel to Hood on Thursday for the final league of the season at 4:00 pm. The winner of Thursday's game will be the fifth seed in the 2011 CAC Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament while the loser will be the sixth seed.
St. Mary's boasted a 3-1 lead after the first period as Cooke and junior attackman Brendan Oster (Mt. Airy, Md./Urbana) found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead with 6:06 remaining in the quarter. Wesley got on the board at 4:08 with a goal by junior midfielder Scott Brozey (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen). Rosson scored his first of three with 1:12 on the clock. Thirty seconds later, the game was delayed for nearly an hour due to lightning strikes in the area.
Once the game resumed, the Wolverine (5-10, 2-6 CAC) defense held St. Mary's scoreless for over 13 minutes until senior attackman Chris Becraft (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) finally broke through with an unassisted goal at 3:05. Lennon followed suit with his first of the day off a Mull assist. The Wesley attack was unable to penetrate Seahawk defensive line as St. Mary's headed into halftime with a 5-1 advantage.
The Seahawks outscored Wesley, 3-1, in the third to augment their lead to 8-2. Cooke struck first in the stanza but senior Justin D'Alonzo (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) scored the Wolverines' second goal at 8:35. Lennon and Rosson scored the final two goals of the period in a 46-second span.
Wesley rallied in the fourth quarter as the Wolverines posted a 4-2 run. The Seahawks netted two of the period's first three goals before the home team notched the game's final three tallies in 4:28, including two in a 37-second span.
St. Mary's outshot the Wolverines, 45-32, while edging the hosts, 32-30, in ground balls. Sophomore midfielder Albert Mitchell (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John's) won 10-of-19 face-offs while scooping up a team-best five loose balls.
In goal, junior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) made 10 saves, including seven in the first half, with three ground balls.
