St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team tallied a goal in each half to open up the Seahawk Classic with a 2-1 non-conference win over No. 25 Franklin & Marshall Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary's (3-0), who is tied for ninth in the South Atlantic region, is one of three Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer teams that remain unbeaten thus far. No. 21 Salisbury University owns a 4-0 record following a 5-0 shutout of Ursinus College in the other Seahawk Classic matchup.
The Seahawks scored early as senior forward Mark Jaskolski (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) put in a loose ball at 2:27 following a scrum in front of the F&M goal. Despite being outshot 9-4 in the first half, St. Mary's held on to its 1-0 advantage as they headed into halftime.
Senior midfielder Matt Grady (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) handed the Seahawks a 2-0 margin after the break as Grady converted on a penalty kick in the 58th minute. The penalty kick was awarded to St. Mary's after junior midfielder Frank VanGessel (Delmar, Del./Delmar) was taken down just inside the left side of the box by senior Eric Elicker (West Chester, Pa./Henderson).
Sophomore forward Ben Beaver (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) started Franklin & Marshall's (2-1) late rally as Beaver kicked in a loose rebound following a save by sophomore goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) on first-year midfielder Jared Bomba's (Newmanstown, Pa./Eastern Lebanon County) shot. Beaver's goal cut the home team's lead to 2-1 with 4:20 left in regulation.
Franklin & Marshall fired off two more shots – one which was blocked and the other hit off the crossbar, falling out of bounds.
Brown picked up a career-best 10 saves in the win as the Diplomats outshot St. Mary's, 22-6, and posted a 10-4 margin in corner kicks.
St. Mary's will return to action tomorrow at 3:00 pm, facing Ursinus College in the final day of the Seahawk Classic. Salisbury will face Franklin & Marshall first at 1:00 pm.
