St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team captured their own Seahawk Classic title Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 shutout of Ursinus College. Sophomore goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) was named MVP of the Classic.
St. Mary's (4-0), who is ranked tied for ninth in the South Atlantic region, finished with six points on two wins in the Classic to earn the title of champion. No. 21 Salisbury University played to a scoreless draw with No. 25 Franklin & Marshall College and the Sea Gulls came in as the runner-up after tallying four points.
The first goal for the Seahawks happened at the 7:23 mark as first-year midfielder Evan Camm (Severna Park, Md./Broadneck) sent the ball into the box from the left side of the field and fellow classmate Tommy Krug (Columbia, Md./River Hill) one-timed the ball to the left of senior goalkeeper Mike Alfieri (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) as Krug slid into the pass.
First-year forward Matthew Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha) gave St. Mary's a 2-0 advantage at 19:52 as Braun chipped one just out of Alfieri's reach from about 25 yards out. The Ursinus (1-3) defense buckled down for the rest of the half and headed into intermission with a two-goal deficit.
The third and final goal for the Seahawks came on a fast break by senior forward Misha Simon (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel). Following an Ursinus corner kick, sophomore defender Pierre Zibi (Silver Spring, Md./DeMatha) cleared the ball out to midfield where Simon picked it up and ran down the right center of the field before chipping it over a sliding Alfieri with 6:41 left in the game.
St. Mary's owned a 15-11 advantage in shots while posting a 10-6 margin in corner kicks.
Brown made four saves in recording his second shutout of the season.
St. Mary's will return to action Wednesday, September 14 as the Seahawks welcome Johns Hopkins University to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 4:00 pm. Hopkins (1-2-1), who is ranked sixth in the Mid-Atlantic region, will be St. Mary's third consecutive opponent from the Centennial Conference.
