Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland women's soccer team played with tremendous fight and heart Tuesday afternoon but the Seahawks came up short as No. 7 Johns Hopkins University posted a 3-0 victory in non-conference action.
Johns Hopkins (7-0) ended sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz' (Parkton, Md./Hereford) shutout streak at 374:48 as first-year forward Hannah Kronick (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) tapped in a Blue Jay shot that hit the crossbar and bounced off a defender on the goal line, giving Hopkins a 1-0 halftime lead.
The Blue Jays added goals in the 54th and 77th minute for the 3-0 final.
Wirtz turned away a career-best 11 shots as a relentless JHU offense fired off 26 shots, including 14 on target. Hopkins tallied a 9-5 corner kick advantage as well.
St. Mary's (4-1), who is ranked ninth in the South Atlantic region, took 10 shots, including five on frame. Junior captains Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana) and Liza Sitz (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) each had two shots on goal while sophomore midfielder Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) also had one on target.
The Seahawks will return to action on Saturday, September 24 as St. Mary's faces York College of Pennsylvania (1-5) on the road in Capital Athletic Conference action at 12:30 pm.
