Box Score St. Mary's City, Md. – Three goals in the first half helped No. 14 York College of Pennsylvania to a 4-0 Capital Athletic Conference win over the St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team on Senior Day Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the start of today's match, the four Seahawk seniors – midfielder Lukas Iraola (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase), captain Ryan Plaisance (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg), midfielder Andrew Ragusa (California, Md./Patuxent) and Frank VanGessel (Delmar, Del./Delmar) – were recognized for their time with the St. Mary's men's soccer program.
York (12-2-1, 4-0 CAC), who is ranked second in the South Atlantic region, struck early as senior midfielder Justin Facer (Prospect Heights, Ill./North Allegheny) converted a penalty kick at 2:21. Senior captain Antonio Bua (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) followed suit over two minutes later as Bua finished a cross from the right from junior captain Matt Yackel (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) at 4:56.
The Spartans owned a 3-0 halftime lead as first-year Greg Bechard (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) picked up a pass from junior midfielder Pablo Martinez (Cheltenham, Pa./Northeast Catholic) in stride and then finished a left-footed shot into the lower right corner at 25:58.
Junior goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School), who finished with a career-high 13 saves, kept York off the scoreboard for the next 44 minutes as Brown turned away five shots during that span, including a few point-blank stops.
Junior forward Austin Johnson (Avalon, N.J./Middle Township) headed in senior captain Cody Pearson's (Crofton, Md./DeMatha Catholic) corner kick at 60:14.
York controlled the match with a 34-4 shot advantage and a 10-1 corner kick margin. Goalkeepers Jesse Derksen (York, Pa./Susquehannock), Brad Schmidt (Moorestown, N.J./Delran) and Steve Handy (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate Christian Academy) combined for the Spartans' sixth shutout of the season with Derksen making two saves in the first half.
St. Mary's will look to snap its three-game skid on Wednesday, October 17 when the Seahawks travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia to face the University of Mary Washington (9-5-1, 2-2 CAC) in Capital Athletic Conference action at 4:00 pm.
