Mary Washington Outlasts Seahawk Women's Soccer in Tournament Shootout

Box Score

Fredericksburg, Va. – The Capital Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament First Round match between St. Mary's College of Maryland and University of Mary Washington came down to a penalty shootout Saturday afternoon as the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw in 110 minutes.

Fourth-seeded Mary Washington came from behind a 2-0 deficit to claim a 3-2 edge in the shootout and advance to Tuesday's semifinal matchup at No. 1 seed Salisbury University.

St. Mary's, the fifth seed in this year's tournament, staked a 2-0 lead in the first round of penalty kicks as its first two kickers, junior midfielder Yvonne Latour (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) and senior forward Kim LaBarge (Gambrills, Md./South River), found the back of the net.  The Seahawks then went on to miss their next three opportunities.

Mary Washington (13-1-3) failed to convert on its first three attempts before sophomore defender Jenna Abraham (South Riding, Va.) and Kelsey Carter connected to knot the shootout at 2-2.

To start off the second round of penalty kicks, the first kicker for each side missed their shot.  St. Mary's second kicker also missed before first-year midfielder Lizzie Weast (Midlothian, Va.) hit the white netting to advance Mary Washington with the 3-2 PK shootout win.

Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Wirtz (Parkton, Md./Hereford) finished the contest with four saves while sophomore Charlotte Owens (Fairfax, Va.) picked up five stops in the draw.

In evenly-matched contest, St. Mary's struck first in the first half as senior forward Tori Eskay (Damascus, Md./Urbana) connected with sophomore Liz Mosher (Bethesda, Md./Madeira) to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead at 18:58.

Eskay's goal almost proved to be the game-winner as the Eagles did not break through the Seahawk defense until the final minute of regulation when sophomore defender Jenny Mayo (Fredericksburg, Va.) knocked one in the equalizer with 59 seconds left on the clock.

The Seahawks dominated both overtime periods, outshooting Mary Washington by a 6-1 margin, but had difficulties finishing.  St. Mary's finished with a 15-9 shot advantage while the Eagles edged the visitors, 6-4, in corner kicks.

Head coach Richard Möller wraps up his first season as the Seahawk head coach with a 5-9-2 record.
