Frostburg State Slips Past St. Mary's Men's Soccer

Box Score

St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland men's soccer team had regionally-ranked Frostburg State University against the ropes Saturday afternoon but the visiting Bobcats eked out a 4-3 double overtime win to remain unbeaten in Capital Athletic Conference action.

First-year midfielder Michael Cronauer (Reisterstown, Md./Franklin) put an end to the 100-plus minute contest with 4:25 remaining in the second extra period as junior forward Alex Brainard's (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen) shot came off the hands of junior goalkeeper Austin Brown (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's School) and Cronauer put it back for the game-winning goal at 4:25.

Frostburg State (10-0-2, 2-0-1 CAC) dominated the match, posting a 36-8 shot advantage, while the Seahawks notched a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.  Brown had a solid game in goal for St. Mary's, registering a career-high 12 saves.

Junior defender Chris Jones (California, Md./Leonardtown) headed in Frostburg's first goal at 9:14 off senior midfielder Ryan Russell's (Waldorf, Md./CSM)  corner kick.

St. Mary's (4-8, 1-2 CAC) responded at 21:12 as senior midfielder Frank VanGessel (Delmar, Del./Delmar) fed a ball into sophomore midfielder Rickie Kalama (Bel Air, Md./Aberdeen) who then sent in a cross from the right side for first-year midfielder Davis Holland (Cape Carteret, N.C./Leonardtown [Md.]) to finish.  Senior midfielder Yacab Kahsai (Mount Rainer, Md./Northwestern) returned a 2-1 lead to the Bobcats as Kahsai dribbled in and fired in a shot that bounced off Brown's hands into the goal at 38:28.

Junior defender Mike Warburton (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) set St. Mary's second equalizer as Warburton sent a free kick from just inside the 50-yard line into the penalty box for first-year midfielder Will Alberding (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) to finish just inside the near post, sending both teams into halftime with a 2-2 draw.

Sophomore forward Matt Braun (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) earned the Seahawks first lead of the game in the second half as Braun converted a penalty kick at 50:28.  St. Mary's was closing in on the upset victory until the 81st minute when Russell found the back of the net for his CAC-leading 11th goal of the season, tying the match at 3-3.

Senior forward Shawn Baker (Jefferson, Md./Brunswick) had an opportunity to end the game in regulation at 86:21 but Baker sailed his penalty kick attempt high over the crossbar to force overtime.  Senior goalkeeper Abiye Jack (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) came up with one save in the win.

St. Mary's will return to the pitch on Tuesday, October 9 when the Seahawks welcome Greensboro College to Seahawk Stadium for non-conference action at 2:00 pm.
