Box Score 2 St. Mary's City, Md. – The St. Mary's College of Maryland baseball team welcomed the Green Terror of McDaniel College to the Hawk's Nest Sunday afternoon for a non-conference double-header. The Seahawks took game one, 4-3, behind a strong pitching effort from senior Michael Victory (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) before falling in game two, 8-4.
In the opener, St. Mary's (4-2) started strong, putting up the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. Senior Keith Johnson (Great Mills, Md./Great Mills) opened up the inning with a single to right field to put the lead-off runner on base. First-year Zach Nadolny (Sparks, Md./Bel Air) next singled on a high pop to right field which caused the right fielder trouble, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Following a pair of strikeouts by the McDaniel pitcher, sophomore Alex Lenovitz (Glyndon, Md./Calvert Hall College) singled to left, bringing home Johnson from second and putting the Seahawks ahead 1-0 through two innings of play.
The score would remain 1-0 until the top of the fourth when the Green Terror would explode for three runs on four hits, highlighted by Marshall Betts' two-run homer as McDaniel took a 3-1 lead. McDaniel carried the 3-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning.
St. Mary's bats awoke in the bottom of the sixth with five consecutive hits to start the inning. Johnson again got the Seahawks off to a fast start with a lead-off double to left field. Nadolny earned his second RBI of the day with a single to right field on the next play, scoring Johnson from second and pulling the Seahawks within one. A pair of RBI singles by senior Nick Urso (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and Lenovitz followed by a single by junior Carlos Cruz (Lexington Park, Md./Great Mills) to pull the Seahawks even and then push them ahead, 4-3, heading into the final inning of action.
Victory (2-0) took St. Mary's through 6.2 innings, surrendering three runs on seven hits while striking out seven. Junior Wick Eisenberg (Towson, Md./Friends School) relieved Victory, getting the only hitter he would face to fly out to right field for the 4-3 final and his first save of the season.
The nightcap saw McDaniel (1-1) get on the board first with a run in the top of the second; however, the Seahawks responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning for a 1-1 tie after two innings.
McDaniel took control with six unanswered runs from the top of the third inning through the top of the fifth, building a 7-1 lead. St. Mary's looked to rally in the bottom of the sixth as junior Mike Schmidt (Burtonsville, Md./Blake) and Urso led off the inning with a pair of singles. The Seahawks would take advantage of a McDaniel infield miscue to score three runs in the inning, closing the gap to 7-4. However, McDaniel would answer with an unearned run of their own in the top of the seventh while holding the hosts scoreless in the seventh to earn the 8-4 victory.
Senior Devon Jerrard (Hunt Valley, Md./Boys' Latin) suffered the loss in game two as Jerrard (1-1) went 3.1 innings, giving up five runs on six hits and striking out one.
The Seahawks will return to action next weekend when they travel to Stevenson University to start Capital Athletic Conference action with a three-game series that features a doubleheader on March 3rd at noon and a single, nine-inning game on March 4th at 1:00 pm.
